I was thinking that it would be cool to have some other uses for the gemstones other than collecting and selling. What about a jewelry maker skill or a decorator skill where you could use them to make decorations for your player and/or your house/tower or maybe even your animals.

    @Burdger, I really, really want a jewelry making skill! I think it'd be neat to be able to make your own jewelry.

    Gemstones could also be used to create coloured tools for cosmetic use, something around the same colour or texture as the gem acquired :O, love the ideas!
